Why do I want to write about Music? I’ve asked myself this but I never really took the question seriously until today.
I don’t know how to answer that perfectly. Maybe someday I will be able to tell you more.
For now… I just know that when I hear a song, I want to talk about it. I want to write about it. I want to tell someone about it. I want to understand the songwriter, the producer. I want to know how the songwriter came up with the lyrics and the tune. I want to know why he/she wrote that song this way and that. I want to know why people love it and hate the song. I want to talk about what the song means to me and what it means to others.
I love to listen to a song incessantly because I always feel I can discover something new behind every word and every note. For me that is the magic about music – the way it can enlighten and inspire me, and allow me to form my own meanings through someone else’s voice and lyrics. I also like to draw comparisons between different songs, or the same song by different artists. I want to know what other music critics think. And I also like to know what I don’t know yet about a particular song, artist, producer and genre.
My knowledge or understanding of music never stops here or ever. When I write about music, I’d keep in mind that not everyone will agree with me, not everyone will trust my judgment and I will always need to re-evaluate what I think I know or believe.
Music is a journey which I would never like to let end. And writing about it is like another way of listening.
